Breakfast, Bold Hues and Books with Martyn Lawrence-Bullard.

Not often do I spend early Tuesday mornings having coffee with celebrity interior designers. In fact, not ever? The ABA Agency and Washington Design Center graciously invited DC Design Coop to join them over breakfast at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel alongside adorable Martyn Lawrence Bullard {of “Million Dollar Decorators”}, Schumacher & Co textile executives and a handful of local magazine editors and fellow Washington DC bloggers. And let me tell you, it was “deelliicciioouuss”.

{Blurry} Shot of Martyn and I after breakfast!

A fan of the hit Bravo show, I knew meeting the fabulous 44-year old interior decorator was going to be a fantastic treat. After all, he is well-traveled, uber-talented {Cher, Elton John and Kid Rock are on his client roster}, and successful with his own line of furnishings, textiles and even candles to name a few. Top that off with a handsome face to boot! At 123 year family-owned old textile house Schumacher & Co., Martyn teamed up with Creative Director, Susan North {who he sweetly coined the “Empress of fabric”} to produce a gorgeous collection of chevrons, ikats, strie silks, stripes and paisleys.

During a post-breakfast panel chat moderated by DC Modern Luxury Editor in Chief Karen Sommer Shalett, Martyn and Liz wowed a room with their insight into textiles and their around-the-world journeys to locate artisan weavers and luxurious materials for the collection. It was important to reflect a unique perspective and specific style for the embroideries and weaves that were inspired by historical patterns and Martyn’s personal souvenirs from exotic countries.

Schumacher, MLB, and DC Magazine

Through his charming nature and witty commentary, Martyn told us of the interesting people he met along the way and how he became one of the worlds best interior designers {did you know he’s one of Elle Decors top 25?}. I learned that mixing and not exactly matching colors in a room makes for a more beautiful palette. And that there is soul in good fabric – so may artisans put their time and heart onto making these wonderful textiles. Martyn also enthusiactically shared with us details of his new book, Live, Love & Decorate and signed copies for guests at  WDC’s Schumacher showroom {check out my signed copy below! Eek! Kisses to you too!}.

Live Love & Decorate by Martyn Lawrence Bullard

And that, ladies and gentleman, was how I spent my Tuesday morning and afternoon. Wonder what Wednesday has in store for me?

Stay tuned for more successful endeavors from the talented MLB brand. And look out in January 2013 for his fellow “Million Dollar Decorato” star, vivacious Mary McDonald to launch her fabric collaboration with Schumacher!

Unique Marbled Wood Flooring.

I am in LOVE with these beautiful floors!

Creative award-winning wood design shop Snedker Studio is the brainchild behind them. They repurpose hard wood flooring with the old {but almost-a-secret} marbling technique, giving this wood an organic, eye-catching, colorful and vibrant pattern. I could see this flooring in an office, home, or retail space.

The mastered art technique originated back in the 15th century, where marbling was initially born to sheets of  paper – known as ebru, or the art of the clouds. Pastel, abstract and sometime muted, marbled paper was reserved for religious writings and royalty. The 17th Century Louis XIII created a similar paper called  a cuve, so-named for the basin in which the paper was dipped to obtain its heavenly hues.

Today, original paper marbling continues at the Giului Giannini artisan workshop in Florence Italy where the craft has been produced since 1856.

Chamber Music.

Holly Hunt has just featured new additions to her much adored {by moi} furniture line. The Chamber Chandelier is now on my top favorite list for ceiling light fixtures. Seems as if I have been specifying lots of ceiling lights as of lately and would love to put this in my concepts rotation. Designed by Allison Berger, this fixtures comes in a plethora of sizes from four glass pendants to twenty one. Also available in a dark amber or brown black patina. Stunning in an entryway, over a dining table, flanking the bed, or centerfold of the large living room. It’s much to my ears.

Top Bedside Tables for a Patient of Perfection.

There are three things left to purchase to perfect my bedroom look – an upholstered bed and possibly two bedside tables. I have two great ones now but could use a little discreet storage {ahem}. I’ve given myself to the end of the year to make it happen. I like the symmetry of a bed being squeezed by two of the same thing… It gives me  a sense of order before bedtime. After peeling through the latest Serena & Lily catalog, which just gets better and better, I rest my eyes on the Ceylon Side Table. A symmetrical, functional, and stylish bed side table with storage. Then I thought, but I still like that other one from Bungalow 5. Or that one from Oly Studio works beautifully. I want to experience them all. That’s the fun of being a decorator. An eternally practicing patient of perfection. =)

Back to sChOOL.

It’s raining here in DC {pssst, I hear there’s a hurricane approaching. Ha!}. And I’m surfing the web for two 12″ x 18″ pillow inserts. I’ve just found two from Crate and Barrel and while stashing some goods into my cart, peeled into this web page of six colored mechanical pencils. This six-pack is made of natural wood and comes in orange, red, purple, black, blue and green with matching erasers. Not sure if I’ve seen ones that look this cool – or were so lucky to have these when I was in grade school – so I had to post them. A nice happy sight to see compared to the fast-moving cloudy grey skies outside. Welcome back to school kids.

Cornice Here, Cornice There.

I put my DIY hands to the test a few weeks ago when the two uneven windows in my bedroom started to REALLY bother me (and they already REALLY bothered me). I had ordered a few yards of fabric to recover inset panels in my headboard. I found I had an extra yard left over and rather quickly scribbled out a plan to make custom cornices to “even up” the side by side bedroom windows. Cornices deliver a sophisticated look that gives height, depth, and elegance to a room. In this case, I wanted to add a texture and height to give the illusion of even windows and enhance the already high ceilings. And I wanted to do it on the cheap.

These are the windows before the new cornices. The linen shades were left over from another designers project and were given to me last year for free. They just so happened to fit (although just a wee tad too skinny)!

In wanting to unify the space and in keeping with my slate silver, cream, and pale gold color scheme, I stuck with the same Robert Allen fabric that was used on the headboard. My cost for the yard? $50.

My honey picked up some 1″ x 12″ wood shelving material, L- brackets, and some staples for my handy staple gun. With tool box in tow, he took them out to our mini patio and cut them down to my specific plans. The cost at Home Depot was less then $30!

cutting down wood for use in a cornice

plans for bedroom window corniceI headed to the craft store and picked up 1/4″ batting to give the cornice a slightly upholstered look. I did not require more then a 45″ x 60″ peice. The store had a sale going on and to my surprise, I only paid $2.05! Score!batting for cornice windows

So I got started. I ironed the fabric and laid it out on my granite countertop backside up. On top of the fabric piece I laid a pace of batting trimmed to size of the fabric. Without much fabric leftover, I had to improvise and fold up as much as I could onto the back of the cornice on top of the battling and staple away.

fabric and wood cornice stapling

It’s best to have a finished interior of the cornice in case you can look up under it or see it from outside when blinds are wide open. But in my case, the roman shades remain drawn at most 1/3 of the window height so one would never see the back of the cornice. After stapling so many times, I realized that an electric staple gun is going on my Christmas wish list.

finished backside of window cornice

Once I inspected the first front panel, I went on to finish the sides and the other window’s cornice. As you can see below, I had to make three separate pieces for the cornice instead of wrapping the fabric around the corner and onto the side rails. The reason? The direction of the pattern was horizontal and there was not enough to cleanly wrap on both sides. So, I made do with the options I had and powered through.

Once the fronts and side were attached, it was time for hanging. To cause less disruption to the walls, my honey simply attached additional L-brackets to the inside tops of each side rail and fastened those to the top side of the window frame. This way, if there is a change of heart with the window treatments, they can be unattached from the wall without any unsightly holes or damage.

Once they both were hung, away went the tools and extras and in came a more complete and layered bedroom all for under $100! Now that I can sleep well to. Sweet dreams!

Not All Scotch is an Acquired Taste.

Okay, most of us are getting on the au natural bandwagon, painting our homes with low-VOC paints, making sure children’s toys and gear is toxin-free, and even cutting out additives in our food. So what not our beauty products!? I’m curious about the non-toxic nail polish from Scotch Naturals. Literally, no chemicals included. An eco-friendly alternative to conventional polish, Scotch’s water-based formula, so they claim, delivers long-lasting, salon-quality results in a stunning array of sophisticated shades. I know that if I’m painting my own nails, there is no long-lasting anywhere on these fingers and toes. Now, the salon finish is another story (ahem, why did my nicely filed nails chip after day three last round?). And with names like To Hell with Swords and Garter, Leprechaun Lynch, Hot Toddy, and Lochness Mystery… and classic packaging, we can surely toast to forward-thinking lacquers.

iPhone Leather Back in Black. Or Tan. How about Green.

Here’s to the *new* iPhone back cover – the Valentine Leather Back. I love the idea of a seamless leather surface on the iPhone. So rich. So timeless. Now that my rubber and plastic Apple iPhone bumper is finally breaking (yeah, what’s up with that?), I might consider something a little more streamlined, organic, and textural. Valentine sells a large assortment of premium grade leathers offering a broad range of color, texture and finish. The pressure sensitive adhesive backs are simple to apply and leave no residue upon removal. Plus, they are made in good ‘ol NYC. Another bonus is they fit seamlessly under the apple iPhone 4 bumper. Just in case.
